Abby, Jack, and their six-month-old daughter Molly met me on a warm, green summer evening in Missoula, Montana for a family session that was every bit as joyful as it was meaningful. It was a little different from my typical sessions in that we worked thoughtfully around Jack’s wheelchair, but that difference only made the experience richer. The love this family shares is undeniable, and I feel so honored to have captured even a glimpse of it.

From the moment we started, I could tell this session was going to be special. Abby was radiant in her dress, a soft, flowy green that made her eyes absolutely pop in the golden hour light. She held Molly with ease and joy. And Jack, seated nearby, was just as much a part of the action, watching with pride, smiling softly, his eyes locked on his wife and daughter.
We didn’t move around a ton, and we didn’t need to. We created magic right where we were—because the real focus wasn’t the scenery, but the people in front of my lens.

Molly might be one of the happiest babies I’ve ever photographed. She gave us so many little grins and soft giggles, totally soaking up the attention and cuddles. Her big blue eyes were absolutely mesmerizing: bright, clear, and curious. The kind of eyes that seem to take everything in.
But what really stopped me in my tracks was how she interacted with her dad. Over and over again, she would reach for him, his hands, his face, with this quiet tenderness that you don’t always expect from such a young baby. Those moments were some of the most powerful of the entire session. You could see the connection, the comfort, the love that already runs so deeply between them.
I didn’t need to pose much. I simply stepped back and let them be a family.

Jack’s wheelchair added an extra layer to the session logistically, but honestly, it changed nothing about the emotion and connection we were there to capture. If anything, it made me more intentional about how we set up the space and framed each moment.
We positioned the family where the light was soft and even, taking care to make sure Jack was always fully part of the scene. Whether Abby was holding Molly beside him or Molly was sitting on his lap with her little hand on his shoulder, we kept the focus on their relationship and how naturally they show up for each other, every single day.
I think there’s often a misconception that family sessions need to follow a certain formula, with certain poses or movement or perfect symmetry. But the truth is: the best family photos are the ones that reflect your life. And this session did exactly that. It was honest, joyful, and completely theirs.

Missoula showed up for us with that beautiful Montana summer light: soft, golden, and full of warmth. Everything around us was lush and green, adding a quiet calm to the photos. We didn’t need to rush or force anything. The whole evening moved at a gentle pace, giving us time to soak in the details: Molly’s tiny fingers, Abby’s bright smile, the way Jack leaned in to listen and watch.
There was a stillness to it, but not in a sad or slow way. It was a stillness full of presence. A sense that this moment was something worth holding on to.

This session reminded me, once again, of why I do what I do.
It’s not just about getting the perfect shot or the most photogenic background. It’s about seeing people. It’s about making space for every version of family, whatever that looks like for you. And it’s about creating something tangible that reflects the love you’re living right now.
For the Finlays, that meant capturing the beauty of their everyday, wheelchair and all. It meant highlighting the small, powerful gestures: a baby reaching for her dad’s face, a mother holding both of them with grace, the three of them nestled into the evening light as the world slowed down around them.
These are the moments that matter. And these are the moments I hope they’ll look back on years from now and feel all over again.
