I wasn’t planning to photograph a proposal that night.
We had just wrapped up a family photo session on the Oregon coast and were heading to grab dinner. It was one of those golden evenings where the light stays soft long after sunset, and after we ate, someone suggested we swing by Ecola State Park to catch the very end of it. We almost didn’t go. But something pulled us in that direction, and I’m so glad it did.
What happened next still gives me chills and it turned into one of the most serendipitous and joy-filled moments I’ve ever had the privilege of capturing.

Ecola State Park is one of the most breathtaking spots along the Oregon Coast. Tucked just north of Cannon Beach, it offers sweeping views of the Pacific, dramatic cliffs, evergreen forests, and trails that lead straight into golden-hour heaven. It’s a dream for any Oregon coast photographer, whether you’re planning an elopement, engagement session, or family photos.
We were walking down one of the trails toward the overlook when my mother-in-law noticed a guy fiddling with his phone and tripod. She casually asked if he was setting up for a time-lapse. He looked up and, without skipping a beat, said, “Actually, I’m about to propose.”
All of us froze for a second. Then she pointed to me and said, “She’s a professional photographer. Do you want her to grab her camera?”
He looked a bit shocked, but immediately agreed.
And just like that, I sprinted back up the trail, heart racing, to grab my gear. The sun was dropping fast, the light was peaking, and I had maybe three minutes to get in place without being obvious.

Back at the overlook, I returned casually, pretending like I hadn’t just been recruited to photograph one of the most unforgettable moments of someone’s life. I took a few photos of my mother-in-law and sister-in-law to blend in, then turned and quietly watched as Zach met Amanda further up the trail.
The sunset filtered through the trees. The wind caught her hair. And right there, with the ocean stretching out behind them, he dropped to one knee.
She said yes.
I clicked as quickly and quietly as I could, catching every reaction, the shock, the joy, the laughter, the tears. It was raw and real and absolutely beautiful. My eyes definably filled with tears as I watched the moment.

I couldn’t have dreamed up a more cinematic location for a proposal. Ecola State Park offers a mix of wild coastline, cliffside trails, and panoramic views of the Pacific that make it a top-tier spot for any Oregon coast engagement session or surprise proposal. It’s just minutes from Cannon Beach, Seaside, and other iconic coastal towns, making it ideal for destination couples who want dramatic scenery without a long hike or remote setup.
Whether you’re planning a Cannon Beach proposal, a seaside elopement, or just want dreamy, windswept portraits on the cliffs, Ecola offers the best of both worlds: convenience and jaw-dropping beauty.
And for anyone planning a surprise proposal? There are so many pockets of space to make it feel intimate and tucked away, even on a busy summer evening.

After Zach popped the question and Amanda said yes, I gave them some space to soak it in. We talked briefly afterward, and I got his email to send the photos the next morning. When I sent them over, he told me the video he had set up didn’t even catch them in frame! If we hadn’t been there, they wouldn’t have had anything from that moment.
Without us walking by, without that spontaneous dinner, without my camera in the car… they wouldn’t have had anything to remember that moment.
The timing still blows me away. I don’t take lightly how rare it is to be in the right place, at the exact right moment, with the right gear in hand. And I’m so grateful I got to be part of it.

If you’ve landed here because you’re dreaming of proposing along the Oregon coast or want to book Oregon engagement photography, you are absolutely in the right place. I travel often for sessions up and down the coast, from Cannon Beach to Manzanita, Cape Kiwanda to Pacific City, and everywhere in between.
As a destination photographer, I work with you to plan every detail, from finding the best coastal overlook, to helping you figure out how to keep things a surprise, to knowing where the sun will hit at just the right angle.
