I’d photographed Stephanie and Jonathan earlier this spring for their maternity session in Alberton, Montana, and even then, their love for their baby boy was overflowing. That session was full of laughter, big skies, and the hope of what was to come. So getting to return, just a few weeks later, to document them holding Ryder in their arms—it was deeply moving. Quiet joy radiated through every room.
Newborn sessions always carry a bit of magic. But this one felt especially tender. A long-awaited baby. A cozy Montana home. And two new parents already so fully wrapped in love for their little boy.

I’ll always have a soft spot for at-home newborn sessions. No rushing out the door. No sterile studios. Just you and your baby in your own space—where the memories are already starting to form.
Stephanie and Jonathan’s home in Alberton, Montana, was the perfect setting for this kind of session. Just a short drive west of Missoula, Alberton offers the quiet rhythm of small-town Montana life. Nestled between pine-covered hills and winding rivers, it’s the kind of place that feels grounded, peaceful, and real. And their home reflected that perfectly: warm, inviting, filled with soft light, and styled with the kind of thoughtful simplicity that let Ryder remain the focus.
We spent most of the session moving gently through the house—no pressure, no rush. I always build in extra time for newborns to nurse, settle, or snuggle, and Ryder set the pace in the most peaceful way. He was a total dream baby. Calm, cuddly, and so clearly content being close to his parents.

I have to take a moment to talk about Ryder’s nursery, because it was so sweet. The kind of room that feels like it grew slowly over time, with intention behind every choice. From the wooden crib to the soft neutral tones and cozy textures, everything felt warm and welcoming. The décor had that unmistakable Montana charm—simple, natural, and rooted in love.
There were little nods to the outdoors, hints of western influence, and soft earthy tones that echoed the land just outside their windows. It wasn’t flashy or overdone—it was meaningful. And it made for the perfect backdrop to document Ryder’s earliest days.
Photographing newborns in their own rooms adds such a personal touch to your photos. Years from now, when Ryder looks back at these images, he’ll not only see what his parents looked like when they held him close—but he’ll also see the very space that held his first memories. The room where he was rocked to sleep. The walls that kept him warm. The place where he first felt home.

Ryder is one of those babies you instantly fall in love with. He was so relaxed and observant, and the way he curled up in Jonathan’s arms or tucked his little hands under his chin while Stephanie looked down at him—those are the moments that just stop you in your tracks.
It’s always so moving to watch new parents settle into their roles. Stephanie held him with that quiet strength I remembered from her maternity session, and Jonathan beamed with pride every time he looked at his son. It’s wild how love expands so quickly—how you can go from wondering what your baby will be like to feeling like you’ve known them forever in just a matter of days.

I love when I get the chance to photograph families through multiple chapters of their story. It’s hard to put into words how meaningful that is. Being invited in to document the anticipation and the arrival creates a thread between images—a visual legacy that stretches from belly to baby.
Stephanie and Jonathan’s maternity session this spring was full of light, joy, and hope. They laughed easily. They held hands across the field. They whispered dreams about the baby they couldn’t wait to meet. And now, just months later, I got to stand in their home and witness all of that love realized.
These are the stories I never tire of telling. The ones that begin before the baby arrives, and continue long after.

If you’re planning a newborn session in Missoula, Alberton, or anywhere in western Montana, I can’t recommend in-home sessions enough. Not only do they offer flexibility and comfort for your new family, but they also capture this fleeting season in the exact place where it’s unfolding.
Your home doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect. You don’t need elaborate props or magazine-ready décor. You just need to show up as you are—with your baby, your love, and your story. I’ll take care of the rest.
These photos are more than portraits. They’re proof. That you held them. That they were small. That these slow days, even the tired ones, were filled with love.

Thank you for inviting me back into your lives to capture this next chapter. Watching you become parents has been such a joy, and getting to meet Ryder felt like being introduced to a long-awaited gift. Your love for him shines through every moment, and I hope these images always bring you back to these early, sacred days of parenthood.
He’s lucky to have you. And I feel lucky to have documented this season for your family.
