A few months ago, I met Emily and Michael for their maternity session in the wildflower fields of Missoula. It was one of those evenings that felt almost magical—soft light, genuine laughter, and two soon-to-be parents overflowing with anticipation for the babies they were about to meet. Getting to photograph them again for their newborn session in Alberton, Montana way an absolute joy.
Emily and Michael recently welcomed their twins, Kaicee and Colter, and I couldn’t be happier for them. These two are already so loved, and it’s been such an honor to document their story—from expecting parents to their first days as a family of four.

When Emily first told me the twins had arrived, I couldn’t wait to meet them. Kaicee spent some time in the NICU after birth, which is always a possibility with twins, but Emily kept me updated every step of the way. Once both babies were safely home, we scheduled their newborn session at the perfect time—around five weeks old, which was right around their original due date. That timing is ideal for premature babies, since it lets them settle into life at home while still capturing those sweet, sleepy newborn moments.

We did the session in Emily and Michael’s home in Alberton, Montana, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Their nursery was adorable—soft, cozy, and filled with personal touches that made it feel so special. Each baby had their own crib, complete with a little wooden letter above it: a “C” for Colter and a “K” for Kaicee. Details like that always make me smile, because they show how much love and thought parents pour into creating a space for their babies.
One of my favorite little touches from the session were the custom name blankets they had for each twin. Seeing Kaicee and Colter all wrapped up with their names across the fabric was just the sweetest thing. Those details make the photos feel even more personal and timeless.

Photographing newborn twins is always such a joy. There’s a rhythm that develops—one baby needing to eat or be rocked while the other drifts off to sleep. It’s this beautiful, chaotic balance that somehow feels completely natural. And Emily and Michael handled it with so much calm and love.
Even though they mentioned that Colter is usually their fussier twin, this time around, he surprised everyone by being as peaceful as could be, while Kaicee decided she’d take her turn being a little fussy. But that’s the fun of newborn sessions—every moment is unpredictable and real. I love leaning into that and letting the photos tell the story just as it unfolds.

What I love most about sessions like this is getting to see the transformation. When I first met Emily and Michael for their maternity session, they were filled with excitement, imagining what life would look like once their twins arrived. There’s always so much unknown during that season—so many “what ifs” and dreams about the future. But then I get to come back, camera in hand, and witness it all coming to life. To see them holding their babies, navigating new parenthood together, and completely in love—it’s the most rewarding part of what I do.
And it’s even more special because I’ve had the privilege of photographing Emily’s sister, Stephanie, for her own maternity and newborn sessions as well. Getting to watch these families grow and to be invited back for each new chapter means the world to me. It’s a reminder of why I love documenting these milestones—not just for one day, but for all the seasons that follow.

The Matthews twins’ newborn session was filled with quiet moments, soft cuddles, and so much love. Whether it was Emily and Michael holding their babies close or the tiny details of two sleepy newborns snuggled side by side, every image from that day tells a piece of their story.
And if you’re expecting your own little one—or two!—and want to capture those first days in a heartfelt, natural way, I’d love to connect.
