The air smelled like spring as I stepped out of the car. I’d never met Emily and Michael before, but they felt familiar. Warm. Easy to be around. Maybe it was because I had photographed Emily’s sister just weeks earlier, or maybe it was the quiet magic of this particular evening, but I could feel right away that this session would be special.
There’s something that happens when you get to witness a family in that final stretch before everything changes. When the to-do lists are growing, the nursery is almost ready, and the weight of what’s coming is starting to settle in, not just physically, but emotionally. It’s a liminal space, full of excitement, quiet nerves, and so much love. That’s where Emily and Michael were that night. And getting to document it, especially with the knowledge that they’re expecting boy-girl twins, was an absolute honor.
We planned this Missoula maternity session for one of my favorite times of year, when the wildflowers are blooming, but the heat of summer hasn’t fully settled in. The mountains gave us everything we could’ve hoped for: a hillside dotted with soft purple lupine and bright arrowleaf balsamroot waving in the breeze. A cluster of blue pines framed the edges of the field, adding depth and contrast to the warm, open light.
And then, just when we thought it couldn’t get better, the moon appeared. Hanging low over the horizon, it cast a faint glow as the sun dipped behind the ridgeline. The clouds moved slowly, diffusing the light in the dreamiest way, and for a few moments it felt like time just paused.
As a Montana maternity photographer, these are the kinds of evenings I live for. Nature showed up for us in every way, and the peaceful setting gave Emily and Michael space to fully soak in this chapter of their story.
Emily brought three dresses to the session, and each one felt like an extension of her, soft, elegant, and effortless. From a creamy, flowing gown that moved with every breeze to a more structured piece that framed her bump beautifully, her wardrobe added such a thoughtful layer to the photos. I loved how the tones blended into the landscape: earthy, romantic, and timeless.
I always tell my maternity clients that outfit choices can completely shape the tone of the gallery, and Emily’s were perfect for the gentle light and natural surroundings. More than anything, though, it was her. She was glowing in that quiet, grounded way that comes from deep excitement and love. Every time Michael looked at her, he lit up too and that connection was so easy to photograph.
Some couples need a little prompting, and that’s totally okay. But Emily and Michael? They were naturals. From the way they held hands to the soft laughter that passed between them, they were constantly connecting. There was one moment when Michael gently placed both hands on Emily’s belly and just closed his eyes for a second. No direction from me. Just him being fully present with the life they’re about to welcome.
As we moved through the session, I gave them space to pause, breathe, and let themselves feel this moment. These photos aren’t just about what pregnancy looks like—they’re about what it means. The quiet strength. The partnership. The expectancy. The way it marks your life forever, even before the babies arrive.
And in the case of Emily and Michael, that meant capturing their joy, their steadiness, and the subtle beauty of preparing to meet not one, but two babies.
There’s something deeply grounding about photographing maternity sessions here in Montana. The mountains near Missoula have a way of holding space for big moments like this. Whether it’s a golden field full of wildflowers or a blue pine forest kissed with evening light, the landscape never fails to rise to the occasion.
Outdoor maternity photography allows for so much more than pretty pictures. It creates an atmosphere that’s calming, emotional, and true to you. No artificial setups, no forced smiles—just you, your partner, and the place you’ve chosen to grow your family.
This session reminded me why I feel so drawn to these kinds of sessions. Because every family’s story is different. And because these quiet evenings, when you’re just a few weeks away from everything changing, deserve to be remembered.
The best part? This isn’t the end of our time together. I’ll be photographing their newborn session when their twins arrive, and I’m already so excited for that day. It’s always such a joy to follow a family from maternity to newborn—to capture the anticipation and the arrival. The same hands on a belly now holding babies. The same smiles, only fuller and maybe a little sleepier. That full-circle moment is one I never take for granted.
If you’re expecting and thinking about documenting this season, I’d love to walk alongside you. Whether you’re carrying one baby or multiples, whether this is your first or your fourth, your story deserves to be told in a way that feels like you.
