Earlier this spring, I photographed their maternity session here in Missoula, Montana. It was dreamy and warm and full of soft light and excitement. And now, with a new baby in tow and the balsamroot fields in full bloom, it felt like a full-circle moment to be behind the camera once again—only this time, with a brand-new chapter unfolding.

We chose an outdoor location just outside Missoula, surrounded by tall grasses, blue pine, and golden balsamroot flowers, which bloom across western Montana in the spring and early summer. It’s one of my favorite places for family and newborn photos because it’s open, peaceful, and has that wild beauty that’s so distinctly Montana.
Outdoor newborn sessions aren’t for everyone—but for families who love nature and want their photos to feel relaxed, timeless, and true to their lifestyle, they can be absolutely perfect. We planned the session for golden hour, and sure enough, that warm evening light showed up right on cue, casting a glow over the hillside and wrapping this sweet family in the softest sun.

Baby Haddie wasn’t entirely sure about the whole photo session experience—and honestly, that’s so normal for newborns. She was a little upset throughout much of it, needing lots of comfort and cuddles as we made our way through the evening. Partway through, we paused so Shannin could feed her and help her settle, and that quiet break gave everyone a chance to slow down and regroup.
Even with her feeling a little off, we were still able to capture so many sweet moments—tiny fingers wrapped around Shannin’s, her face nestled against Luke’s chest, and little glimpses of calm between the cries. Shannin and Luke were patient, grounded, and so full of grace as they cared for her, never rushing, never forcing. That kind of tenderness always shines through, even when things don’t go perfectly.
And while the wildflowers and light made for a beautiful backdrop, what really stood out was the love between them. This stage of newborn life isn’t always smooth—but it’s real, and it’s full of meaning. Haddie may have been fussy, but she was deeply held and completely loved, and that’s what the photos will always show.

There’s a quiet rhythm to photographing babies outside. It’s different from an in-home session—less structured, more fluid. The light shifts, the wind moves gently, and the earth becomes part of the frame. For families like Shannin and Luke who feel most at peace outside, choosing a wildflower field or mountain backdrop makes the session feel less like an event and more like an evening spent together.
And if you’re wondering about logistics—yes, outdoor newborn sessions can absolutely be safe and comfortable. I always work with families to find mild weather, soft ground, and shaded options. We keep things slow, bring extra blankets, and stay close to whoever makes baby feel safest. The goal is never to pose perfectly—it’s to capture connection in a setting that enhances it.
Shannin and Luke’s session reminded me again just how magical these outdoor newborn moments can be. It was peaceful, unrushed, and full of real emotion.

Photographing both Shannin and Luke’s maternity and newborn sessions was such a joy. When you get to see a couple move from one chapter to the next, you begin to see their rhythm—not just as parents, but as partners, teammates, and people growing together.
During their spring maternity session, I watched them laugh, hold hands, and talk softly about the baby girl they couldn’t wait to meet. Now, with Haddie in their arms and wildflowers all around them, that vision had become something real.
Being trusted to document both chapters of this story is never something I take lightly. It’s the kind of work I feel most called to—honoring the transformation, the tenderness, and the realness of becoming a family.

Whether you’re leaning toward an in-home lifestyle session or an outdoor newborn shoot among the mountains or meadows, there’s no wrong way to document these early days. The important thing is choosing what feels like you.
I offer newborn photography throughout Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley, with sessions that are slow-paced, baby-led, and centered around connection.

Thank you for letting me be a small part of your story. Watching you step into parenthood with so much tenderness has been a joy, and Haddie is already so clearly loved beyond measure. I hope these photos always bring you back to this golden evening. The wildflowers. The wind. The light. The way she fit perfectly in your arms.
You are building something beautiful.
