There’s something incredibly special about photographing a family as they grow—capturing one chapter, and then getting to turn the page and document the next. That’s exactly what made this newborn session with Baby Anderson so meaningful. I first met Katie and Kellen (and their two older kiddos, Marlyn and Braxton) during their maternity session, and I knew right away this family was something special.
So when Baby Anderson finally made his arrival, I was so excited to be welcomed back to capture their first days together as a family of five. This was part of my maternity and newborn bundle, which is one of my favorite offerings—it lets me tell the full story of this beautiful transition into a new season of life. And in this case, it was even more meaningful knowing that this was Katie and Kellen’s third and final baby.
Because their home is currently under construction, we held their newborn session at Baby Anderson’s grandma’s house out in Lolo. And honestly, it couldn’t have been more perfect. We found the coziest upstairs bedroom with soft natural light, a peaceful vibe, and plenty of space for the family to settle in and just be themselves.
I love in-home newborn sessions for exactly this reason: they’re relaxed, real, and filled with the kind of warmth that’s hard to recreate anywhere else. There’s something about photographing a new baby surrounded by family in a space that already holds love and memories—it makes the photos feel timeless.
From the moment I arrived, Katie and Kellen were joking around, laughing, and making the whole space feel light and easy. Katie looked absolutely stunning, even just days after giving birth (seriously, she was glowing). It’s always inspiring to see that kind of joy and confidence in new parents, especially when life is a little chaotic with three little ones running around!
Braxton and Marlyn totally stole the show in the best way. Marlyn came up and gave me a big hug, which completely melted my heart. It’s moments like that that remind me why I love what I do. When clients turn into friends, and the kids remember me from our last session—it makes everything feel full-circle.
Braxton brought all the big brother energy, and both kids were making the funniest faces during our time together. They kept me on my toes and had me laughing the entire time. Even Baby Anderson, who wasn’t in the happiest mood that day, gave us a few sweet moments—including a perfect little newborn smile that I was lucky enough to catch on camera.
One of the things I loved most about this session was the color palette. Katie and the kids wore soft blue tones that complemented each other beautifully and added to the gentle, peaceful vibe of the photos. The colors worked perfectly with the neutral tones of the room and made the whole gallery feel cohesive and serene—while still full of real-life personality.
Choosing wardrobe pieces that flow well together makes such a difference in newborn photography, and this session was a perfect example of how simple styling can elevate an in-home shoot. (And yes—if you ever need help figuring out what to wear for your session, I’ve got you covered with wardrobe guides and a full client closet!)
Missoula is such a special place to raise a family—and to document all the milestones that come along the way. Whether it’s in the comfort of your own home or a cozy space like a grandparent’s house, I believe these quiet newborn moments deserve to be remembered.
It’s not just about capturing the baby (though yes, those sleepy shots and soft newborn features are irresistible!). It’s about the sibling giggles, the way a mama looks at her baby with awe, and the quiet, unscripted moments of connection that happen in between.
Sessions like this one with Baby Anderson and his family are why I love what I do. They’re messy, beautiful, and full of heart—and that’s exactly how I want your memories to feel when you look back at them years from now.
