7 Waterfalls Within Driving Distance of Winston‑Salem That Are Perfect for a Photoshoot

There’s something about photographing people near water that slows everything down in the best way. Maybe it’s the sound, maybe it’s the way light softens when it filters through trees and reflects off the surface. Either way, some of my favorite sessions around Winston-Salem have happened with damp shoes, a little bit of mud, and a waterfall in the background.

Just about an hour from Winston-Salem, Hanging Rock State Park has a handful of waterfalls that all feel completely different from each other. It’s one of those places where you could shoot multiple sessions and still come away with something new every time.

Lower Cascade Falls

Lower Cascade Falls is usually the first place I suggest to families or couples who want something beautiful without a long hike. The walk is short and manageable, and when you arrive, it opens up into this wide, layered rock face with water gently spilling over the edge.

The first time I shot here, it was early evening and the light was slipping through the trees in thin streaks. The rocks held onto warmth from the day, and there was this soft glow that made everything feel calm. Kids tend to love this spot because they can explore safely near the water, which makes for really natural moments.

For sessions, I usually keep movement simple here. Walking along the rocks, sitting close together near the edge, letting kids dip their toes in if it’s warm enough. It’s not about big dramatic posing. It’s about letting the space do its thing.

Upper Cascades

Upper Cascades feels a little more tucked in. The trail is still fairly approachable, but it winds just enough to make the waterfall feel like a small discovery when you reach it.

The water flows through a narrow channel here, creating a softer, more enclosed setting. I’ve found this spot works especially well for couples.

Window Falls

Window Falls is one of the more recognizable spots in Hanging Rock, and for good reason. The waterfall drops right next to an open window in the rock, giving it it’s name.

It’s a shorter walk to get there, which makes it popular. I usually plan sessions here either early in the morning or closer to sunset to avoid the busiest times. When the light hits just right, it filters through the opening and creates this soft, diffused glow that wraps around everything.

Hidden Falls

Just below Window Falls you can find Hidden Falls. The trail feels less traveled, and by the time you get there, it usually feels like you have the space to yourself.

This is where I’ll bring couples who want something that feels a little more adventurous without being overwhelming. The waterfall itself is more subtle, but the surrounding area is what makes it special. Mossy rocks, thicker tree cover, and light that filters through in small patches.

I always tell clients ahead of time to expect a bit of uneven ground here. It’s part of the experience, and it usually ends up being something they remember.

Stone Mountain Falls

About an hour and a half from Winston-Salem, Stone Mountain State Park is home to one of the most striking waterfalls in the area.

Stone Mountain Falls drops over a massive granite face, and it’s one of those places that feels bigger than you expect when you see it in person. The trail down to the base gives you a full view of the falls, and there are plenty of spots along the way to pause and take photos.

I usually recommend this location for couples who are open to a bit more walking and want something that feels expansive. There’s a sense of scale here that you don’t get at every waterfall.

Shacktown Falls

If you want something closer to Winston-Salem without committing to a full hike, Shacktown Falls is such a good option.

I’ve used this location for shorter sessions, especially with families who have young kids or couples who want something simple and meaningful without traveling too far.

The light here tends to be soft in the late afternoon, especially near the water. It reflects off the surface and creates this gentle brightness that works really well for skin tones. It’s one of those places where you don’t have to try too hard to make it feel beautiful.

Fall Creek Waterfall

Right by the Virginia border, Fall Creek Waterfall is wider, more open, and the trail leading to it has these stretches where the forest pulls back just enough to let more light in.

This spot works really well for sessions where you want a mix of scenery. You can start along the trail, where everything feels soft and wooded, and then move toward the falls for something a little more expansive.

Planning Your Waterfall Photoshoot in North Carolina

Waterfall sessions always come with a little unpredictability, and that’s part of what makes them so special.

Shoes matter more than you think. I usually suggest bringing something comfortable for walking, even if you plan to change once we get to the main spot. The trails can be uneven, and a little bit of preparation goes a long way.

Timing is everything. Early morning and evening tend to give the softest light and the quietest trails. Midday can still work, especially in more shaded areas, but it feels different.

And then there’s the pace. These sessions are never rushed. We walk, we pause, we let things unfold naturally. Some of my favorite photos have come from in-between moments. A quick laugh while stepping over rocks, a quiet second standing close together while listening to the water.
