The Parlet family’s family and maternity session was one of those evenings. The kind where nothing is rushed, the light lingers longer than expected, and everything unfolds at exactly the pace it needs to. They are preparing to welcome their sweet baby girl, who will soon be joining big sister Collins, and this session felt like a gentle pause before life shifts into something new.

We met late in the day, during that early fall window when the air starts to soften and the sky begins to put on a show. The sun was low, the light warm and golden, and the clouds stretched across the sky in a way that made you stop and look twice. Every so often, planes passed overhead, tiny and distant, catching the light as they moved. Collins noticed every single one.

Family and maternity sessions with toddlers always carry a certain unpredictability, and that is part of what makes them so special. Collins needed a little time to warm up, which is exactly how it should be. There was no pressure to jump straight into smiles or interaction. We started slow. We walked. We observed. We let her take it all in.

This is something I care deeply about as a family photographer serving Winston Salem and the surrounding North Carolina area. Kids do not need to perform to be photographed beautifully. They need space to feel safe and seen. When you give them that, everything else follows naturally.
At first, Collins stayed close. She watched. She held hands. She took in the world around her with quiet curiosity. Her parents met her right where she was, letting her lead the way. Those early moments were tender and honest, full of small gestures that speak volumes. A hand on a shoulder. A quiet smile. A shared glance between parents who know this season is fleeting.

As the session unfolded, something shifted.
The giggles came first. Then the pointing. She started noticing things out loud, drawing attention to the sky, the planes, the little details adults often miss. Her confidence grew with each minute, and by the end of the session, she was fully herself. Hugging. Smiling. Laughing. Leaning in close. Those transitions are always my favorite part of photographing families.

Watching a child open up during a session is a reminder that trust is built, not assumed.
This session also held that quiet magic that comes with maternity photography. The anticipation. The in between. The knowing that everything is about to change, but wanting to remember exactly how it feels right now. The way they moved together as a family already felt complete, even as they made room for someone new.

Early fall is one of my favorite seasons for family and maternity photos in North Carolina. The light is softer, the temperatures kinder, and there is a sense of transition in the air. It is a season that naturally mirrors what so many families are experiencing. Growth. Change. Letting go of one chapter while preparing for the next.
The sky that evening felt like it was participating in the session. Soft colors, slow movement, and a calm presence that wrapped everything together. Those are the kinds of details that make photos feel timeless later on. Not just how people looked, but how the world felt around them.

As a Winston Salem family photographer, I am always drawn to sessions that prioritize connection over perfection. The Parlet family embodied that fully. There was no forcing smiles or worrying about whether things were going exactly as planned. They trusted the process, trusted their daughter, and trusted that the story unfolding was enough.

By the end of the session, Collins was giggling freely, running toward her parents, pointing things out with excitement, and wrapping her arms around them in spontaneous hugs. Those moments are never manufactured. They happen because a child feels comfortable, respected, and secure.

Family and maternity photography is not about freezing a moment in time. It is about honoring it. About acknowledging that this season matters just as much as the next one. The Parlet family’s session felt like a love letter to this chapter of their story.
For families in Winston Salem and across North Carolina who are considering a family or maternity session, this is your reminder that the best photos often come from slowing down. From allowing space. From trusting that your kids do not need to be anything other than who they already are.

If you are planning a maternity session, a family session, or a combination of both, choosing a photographer who understands child led sessions makes all the difference. Especially during seasons of transition, when emotions are layered and energy levels shift from moment to moment.
The Parlet family’s session was a reminder that some of the most meaningful photos come from patience. From allowing kids to warm up. From letting the evening stretch a little longer. From noticing the sky, the sounds overhead, and the small moments that would otherwise slip by unnoticed.
Soon, their family will look a little different. There will be another tiny hand to hold, another voice in the mix, another chapter unfolding. But this season, this evening, this version of their family deserves to be remembered too.
And that is exactly what this session did.
