Crystal reached out to me just days before her due date after their original photographer had to cancel. I remember reading her message and immediately hoping I had space and somehow, I did! It felt like one of those quiet, meant-to-be moments that happens behind the scenes, where everything just lines up at the right time.
A few days later, I was pulling up to their home for this Winston-Salem maternity session, camera in hand, not fully knowing what the afternoon would hold, but so excited!

The moment I stepped inside, I could tell this session was going to be something special. Their home had that layered, lived-in feeling. Art leaned casually against the walls. Instruments tucked into corners like they had stories of their own. It felt creative and calm at the same time. A space that makes you slow down.
Crystal greeted me with the warmest smile, and within minutes they were offering me Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups. I don’t think I’ve ever felt more immediately at ease walking into a session. If you’ve never had them, they’re kind of a cult favorite. Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter Cups
Luke was easygoing in that quiet, grounded way. Wesley was already moving, already curious, already full of energy. It didn’t take long before I stopped feeling like a photographer walking into someone’s home and started feeling like I was just being let into a small piece of their life.

Wesley climbed up onto the kitchen countertops, dancing without hesitation while his parents laughed and tried to keep up. There was music playing softly in the background, and for a few minutes, the whole room felt like it was moving together.
We then found our way to the couch, where everything slowed down. Wesley curled into Crystal, resting his head against her growing belly, his small hands pressing gently.
They sat on the stairs for a while too. Wesley played with his parents’ wedding rings, rolling them between his fingers, completely focused. This is why I love being a North Carolina maternity photographer. It isn’t about perfect posing or perfect timing. It’s about noticing the small things that are already happening.

At one point, we moved into their den, which also doubles as Luke’s music space. There was a piano against the wall, worn in the best way. The kind of instrument that has been played often, not just displayed. Luke sat down and started to play, and without needing any direction, Crystal and Wesley began to move around the room.
Dancing, spinning, laughing. It felt natural. Like something they would have done even if I wasn’t there.
Luke is a musician, and his work adds so much depth to who they are as a family. If you want to hear his music, you can find it here:

Those moments in that room felt especially meaningful knowing their baby girl will grow up hearing that same music, in that same space.

We made our way upstairs eventually, into the nursery. It was simple and thoughtful. Books stacked near the bed. Soft textures layered throughout the room. Everything ready, but still waiting.
The light in there was unreal. It poured in through the window in the softest way, wrapping around Crystal as she sat on the edge of the bed with Wesley curled into her side. They read a few books together, turning pages slowly, pausing here and there when Wesley got distracted or wanted to point something out.
Those are the moments I always come back to when I think about sessions like this. The in-between pieces. The pauses. The way time feels like it stretches just a little.
Their dog wandered in and out of the room during this part, occasionally hopping onto the bed, occasionally just watching everything unfold. She added just the right amount of chaos.

As the afternoon shifted toward evening, we stepped outside. The air had that warm, late-spring feel to it. Not too hot, just enough to make everything feel soft and slow.
Luke mentioned growing up in California and how running through a sprinkler was all he really needed as a kid. It felt like such a small, offhand comment, but it turned into one of my favorite parts of the entire session. They pulled out the sprinkler, turned it on, and within seconds Wesley was running through it, laughing in that full-body, completely unfiltered way. Then Crystal joined. Then Luke. Water catching the light. Bare feet on the concrete. The kind of moment that feels almost too simple to matter, until you realize it’s everything.

An in-home maternity session in Winston-Salem or anywhere in North Carolina allows space for real life to show up. You’re surrounded by the things that already matter to you. The routines you’ve built. The little corners that hold your everyday moments. It doesn’t feel like stepping into something staged. It feels like remembering.
If you’re considering a session like this, I wrote more about what to expect here:

Driving home that evening, I kept thinking about how close this session came to not happening at all. If their original photographer hadn’t canceled, our paths probably wouldn’t have crossed. And yet, this session ended up being one of my favorites. It wasn’t because everything was perfectly styled or perfectly planned. It was because it felt honest. A family on the edge of change. A little boy about to become a big brother. A home holding all of it at once.
These are the kinds of sessions that stay with me. The ones that feel less like a photoshoot and more like being invited into something real.
