If you have ever thought about booking family photos but felt a little unsure about what the experience would actually be like, you are not alone.
Most families come to me with some version of the same concern. Will my kids cooperate? Will it feel awkward? Do I need to know how to pose? What if someone has a meltdown? What if I have nothing to wear?
These questions make complete sense, especially if family photos have felt stressful or overwhelming in the past. My approach to family photography is intentionally designed to take that pressure off. From the very first email to the moment you receive your gallery, my goal is to make the experience feel calm, supportive, and rooted in real connection.
This post is meant to walk you through exactly what you can expect from a family session with me, so you can show up feeling prepared, confident, and actually excited.

I am a family and wedding photographer serving Winston-Salem and the surrounding North Carolina area, and my work is deeply rooted in nostalgia, connection, and storytelling. I have always been drawn to the quiet in between moments. The way a child reaches for a parent’s hand without thinking. The way families naturally gravitate toward each other when they slow down.
I have spent years working closely with children, including nannying for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, and those experiences shape how I approach every family session. I understand how kids move through the world. I know that trust takes time and that connection cannot be rushed. Because of that, my sessions are child led, flexible, and intentionally slow.
Family photography should feel like an extension of your real life, not a performance.

One of the most important parts of your family session happens before we ever meet.
Once you book, you will receive a detailed session guide designed to help you feel prepared without feeling overwhelmed. This guide walks you through what to expect, how to think about timing, how to talk to your kids about photos in a positive way, and how to set everyone up for success without pressure.
We will also talk through your family specifically. Your kids’ ages. Their personalities. Any worries you might have. There is no one size fits all approach to family photography, and I take the time to understand what will help your family feel most comfortable.

This is one of the biggest stress points for moms, and it is something I care deeply about addressing.
You do not need to buy a whole new wardrobe to have beautiful family photos.
In addition to the styling guidance included in your session guide, I also offer a client closet specifically for moms. The client closet is filled with carefully curated dresses that photograph beautifully, feel comfortable, and align with the timeless, sentimental style of my work.
These pieces are meant to take the pressure off. Soft fabrics. Flowy silhouettes. Neutral and earthy tones that move well and flatter a variety of body types. Many moms tell me this is one of their favorite parts of the experience because it removes the guesswork entirely.
When moms feel confident and comfortable, it changes the entire tone of the session. You can focus on your kids instead of adjusting an outfit or worrying about how you look. The client closet is there to support you, not complicate things.
We will talk through options together ahead of time so you feel excited and confident walking into your session.

When we meet for your family session, there is no expectation for your kids to perform.
We start slow. Especially with younger children, the first part of the session is about observation and connection. We walk. We talk. We let kids explore their surroundings. This is how trust is built.
I will gently guide you, but I am never forcing stiff poses or asking kids to smile on command. Instead, I give prompts that encourage interaction. Holding hands. Walking together. Sitting close. Laughing. Talking. These moments allow genuine emotion to surface naturally.
If a child needs a break, we take one. If someone needs to be held the entire time, that is more than okay. Some of the most meaningful photos happen when kids are exactly where they feel safest.

This is such an important question, and the honest answer is that it happens sometimes. And it is okay.
Children are human. They have off days. They get overwhelmed. They need comfort. My sessions are designed with this in mind. There is no rush and no pressure to push through discomfort.
Often, those moments of needing reassurance lead to some of the most tender photographs. A parent crouching down to meet their child’s eye. A quiet hug. A whispered reassurance. These are real moments that reflect what parenthood actually looks like.

Think of me as a calm guide rather than a director.
I am paying attention to light, composition, and storytelling, but I am also paying attention to your family’s energy. When to slow down. When to move. When to step back and let a moment unfold on its own.
You do not need to worry about what to do with your hands or how to stand. I will offer direction when it is helpful and step back when it is not.

After your session, I carefully curate and edit your gallery with the same intention that guided the session itself. My editing style is warm, timeless, and true to life, designed to age well and feel just as meaningful years from now.
Your gallery will include a mix of candid moments, connection focused portraits, and the quiet details that often end up meaning the most.

Family photography is not about perfection.
It is about honoring the season you are in right now. The way your child fits in your arms today. The way your family moves together in this chapter of life. These moments change quickly, and photographs allow us to return to them.
As a Winston-Salem family photographer, my goal is to create images that feel lived in, honest, and deeply personal. Photos that remind you not just of how your family looked, but how it felt to be together.

If this approach resonates with you, I would love to photograph your family.
