It was Mother’s Day weekend, which already carried its own kind of meaning. And for the Edwards family, it was the beginning of something new, something growing, something just starting to take shape.
They were there to share that they are expecting their second baby girl later this year.

Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, North Carolina is such a perfect location for family photos. That evening, the arboretum felt especially full of life. Spring blooms were scattered everywhere, soft pinks and whites layered against fresh green leaves.
Urika and Laura showed up in matching yellow dresses, which caught the light in the prettiest way. It was one of those details that sounds simple, but in real life it pulled everything together. Laura looked at her mom constantly, like she was checking in and also copying her at the same time.

Laura had one very important job that day. She was the one announcing her baby sister.
She carried the ultrasound photo around like it was the most important thing she owned. At one point she ran through the grass with it in her hand, holding it up and showing it off like she could not wait for the world to know. She would pause every so often to bring it back to her parents, almost like she wanted to make sure they saw it too.
You cannot direct a three-year-old into that kind of emotion. You just stay ready and pay attention.
There was a stretch of time where Brandon lifted her up and spun her around while Urika watched, smiling. Laura’s laugh carried through the garden.

We spent most of the session inside the arboretum, and it felt like the right choice the entire time. The flowers were not overwhelming. They were layered in a way that gave us room to move, to pause, to shift directions when Laura decided it was time to run instead of stand still.
If you have never been, the Tanglewood Park Arboretum is tucked inside the larger park and offers a quieter, more intimate setting. It is one of those places that changes week to week during the spring. You could photograph there multiple times and have it look different every time.
The paths wind gently, and there are pockets of blooms that feel almost hidden until you turn a corner. It creates this rhythm where you are constantly discovering new backdrops without needing to search for them.
At one point, Laura stopped in front of a cluster of flowers and held up the ultrasound again, completely unprompted. Urika crouched down next to her, brushing a piece of hair out of her face. It was a small moment, but it felt like everything the session was about.

There are a lot of places to photograph in North Carolina, but Tanglewood Park continues to stand out for sessions like this.
First, the variety. Within a short walk, you can move from open fields to wooded paths to curated gardens. That flexibility matters, especially when you are photographing families with young kids who need space to move.
Second, the light. The way the trees are spaced allows sunlight to filter through without feeling harsh. It gives you consistency while still allowing for those little pockets of glow that make everything feel softer.
The park itself is expansive, which helps it never feel crowded even during busy seasons. According to Forsyth County Parks and Recreation, the park spans over 1,100 acres, which means there is always somewhere to go if you need a quieter corner.
And then there is the feeling of it. It does not feel overly manicured, but it also does not feel wild. It sits somewhere in between, which makes it perfect for families who want something natural but still beautiful.
For anyone planning a session in the area, especially a maternity or pregnancy announcement, it is one of those locations that gives you space to focus on the people instead of worrying about the setting.

There was something especially meaningful about this session happening on Mother’s Day weekend. It added a layer that you could feel, even if no one said it out loud.
That is the quiet truth in sessions like this. It is not just about announcing a new baby. It is about honoring the season you are currently in before it shifts.
Laura will not always be the only little girl running through the arboretum. She will not always carry that ultrasound photo like it is a treasure. Soon she will be holding a tiny hand instead.

Sessions like this always remind me that the most important part is not the location or the outfits, even though both matter in their own way. It is how the session feels while you are in it.
If you are planning a pregnancy announcement session in Clemmons or the surrounding areas, whether at Tanglewood Park or somewhere else, it helps to choose a place that allows for that kind of freedom. A place where your family can just exist together.
If you are still exploring options, you can also look into some of my other favorite garden locations for inspiration on locations that fit your vision.
