Some sessions feel like a slow build, like you’re easing your way into comfort. Others take off the second the shutter clicks—and that was Grace and Drew to a tee. From the moment we met up in Hamilton, Montana for their early morning couple’s session, I could tell this one was going to be fun. The wind was fierce, the air bit with a winter chill, and yet there they were—laughing, cuddling, chasing each other through an open field like the cold didn’t even register.
Oh, and did I mention Grace was wearing bright red cowboy boots?
Yes. It was that kind of session. Bold, spontaneous, joyful, and full of movement—right down to the unexpected snow that started to fall halfway through, turning everything just a little more magical.
If you’ve never driven through Hamilton on a quiet morning, you might not know what a gem it is. The Bitterroot Mountains rise up on the west side like something out of a painting, and no matter the season, there’s a wild beauty to the landscape that makes it perfect for natural, connection-driven couple’s photography.
But what I loved most about this session wasn’t the view—it was the way Grace and Drew embraced it all. The wind? They ran right into it. The cold? That just meant more excuses to stay close. And when the snowflakes started falling mid-session, dusting their shoulders and catching in Grace’s hair? They didn’t pause. They just laughed harder.
This is what I always hope for in a shoot: people willing to show up fully, to let go of perfection, and to let the day unfold however it wants to.
What I love about sessions like this is how alive they feel. There was nothing still or overly posed about it. They were constantly moving—hugging, dancing, pulling each other close, then sprinting off again to warm up. When the snow began to fall, it was like the perfect punctuation mark to the morning. Not planned. Not dramatic. Just soft, quiet flakes drifting down and adding an extra layer of intimacy.
There’s something cinematic about weather like that. Not for the sake of drama, but because it makes you feel like you’re inside a moment that’s completely yours.
Grace and Drew didn’t need me to tell them how to connect. Sure, I gave some direction—simple movements, ideas to help them settle in—but for the most part, I just got to witness the way they naturally gravitated toward each other. Grace would start to shiver, and Drew would pull her in tight. He’d whisper something into her ear, and her whole face would light up. They teased each other, got snow in their hair, and never once looked at the camera like they were trying to perform.
That kind of trust is a dream for me as a photographer. When couples feel free to be themselves, that’s when we create something lasting—not just pretty photos, but images that feel full of soul.
If you’re ever worried about “not knowing what to do” during your session, take a page from Grace and Drew: just focus on each other. The rest will come.
While snow isn’t always on the forecast, it’s not uncommon to get a surprise dusting when you’re shooting in Western Montana—especially in places like Hamilton, where the valley tends to collect weather from all directions. I always recommend dressing warm, layering up, and being ready for a little bit of everything.
If it snows during your session, we’ll make the most of it. Snow adds texture, emotion, and a certain softness to your photos—whether it’s drifting gently through the air or landing in your eyelashes. And don’t worry about looking cold or stiff. I’ll guide you through cozy poses that help you stay warm and connected throughout the shoot.
What stood out to me most about Grace and Drew wasn’t just how comfortable they were together—it was the joy they carried. Everything felt lighthearted. They didn’t take themselves too seriously. They embraced the chaos. They laughed a lot. And even though we were all kind of frozen by the end, there was a warmth that lingered long after the last photo.
There’s something incredibly refreshing about documenting people who are unapologetically themselves. They showed up, held each other close, and had a genuinely good time—and that’s what makes these images come alive.
Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, just got engaged, or simply want to freeze this season of your life with your person—this is your sign to make it happen. Western Montana, and especially places like Hamilton, offers a stunning and intimate setting for any couple who wants to reconnect, slow down, and walk away with more than just pretty photos.
I work with couples who value meaning over perfection, who don’t mind a little wind in their hair or snow on their shoulders if it means walking away with photos that feel like them. If that sounds like you, let’s talk.
