There’s something about the beach that makes people come alive.
Maybe it’s the way the air smells like salt and freedom. Maybe it’s the open sky, or the rhythm of the waves. Whatever it is, beach sessions just hit different. And Kay and Brian’s engagement session on Long Beach Island in New Jersey was everything I love about photographing couples by the ocean.
These two brought the energy. They showed up ready to play, ready to move, ready to get soaked and sandy and completely into the moment and it made all the difference. As a wedding and engagement photographer who’s based in Montana, I don’t get to be by the water every day. So when I do, I’m all in. And this session was one I’ll never forget.

If you’re planning an engagement session on the New Jersey coast, Long Beach Island is one of the most beautiful and underrated spots for photos. Located just off the mainland, LBI offers miles of soft sand, calm waves, and wide open skies that feel like something straight out of a movie.
There are so many reasons I love photographing couples at the beach, but the biggest one is this: the environment invites you to let go. You can’t really fake anything when you’re running barefoot through the surf or laughing as the tide creeps up your legs. The wind messes your hair, the salt sticks to your skin, and the moment just becomes real.
Kay and Brian fully embraced that.
We wandered the shoreline, found quiet pockets of space, and let the beach do what it does best—strip away all the pressure and leave you with joy.

One of my favorite things about Kay and Brian’s Long Beach Island engagement session was how completely open they were to every idea I suggested. They trusted me to guide the session, to chase the light, and to lean into the movement of the evening. That trust gave us room to create something so much more authentic than stiff poses or forced smiles.
They splashed through the water, wrapped up in each other, kissed in the waves, and even ended the session completely soaked and laughing. I always tell my couples: the more you let go, the more you’re willing to play and get a little messy, the more powerful your photos will be. These two proved it perfectly.
If you’re thinking about doing your engagement session at the beach, here’s your sign to go all in. Bring an extra towel, wear something that moves with the wind, and be ready to let the ocean do its thing.

From the start, everything about this session lined up. Kay and Brian chose outfits that worked beautifully with the coastal tones, light, breezy, and timeless. The sky gave us soft pastels and glowing light. The beach was just busy enough to feel alive but quiet enough to carve out our own little world.
There was one moment in particular that stood out to me. The tide had come in a bit more than expected, and instead of retreating, they leaned into it. Holding hands, they stepped straight into the waves as the sun dipped lower, completely unfazed by the water. It was spontaneous, romantic, and exactly the kind of moment you want to look back on and say, “That was us.”

The best part? Their wedding is just around the corner, and I already know it’s going to be incredible.
Kay and Brian have the kind of energy that makes everyone feel welcome. They’re playful, kind, and clearly head over heels for each other. Getting to photograph this season of their story, first here on the beach, and soon on their wedding day, is a huge honor.
I always feel extra grateful when I get to be part of both the engagement session and the wedding day, because it builds such a natural rhythm and trust. By the time the big day arrives, we’re already connected, and that shows up in the photos.

If you’re planning a New Jersey engagement session and love the idea of the beach, Long Beach Island is the perfect backdrop. It’s romantic, relaxed, and just a little bit wild in the best way.
