These two have the kind of love that feels easy—natural, unforced, and deeply rooted. We met up early one morning in Hamilton, Montana, tucked into the heart of the Bitterroot Valley. What none of us expected that morning was just how wild the weather would actually be. The wind swept through the valley like it had a mind of its own, sharp with cold and relentless in its energy. But honestly? It ended up being kind of perfect. There’s something raw and real about braving the elements together, and Sylvia and Boone did exactly that—with laughter, warmth, and the kind of chemistry that makes you forget how frozen your fingers are.
One of the reasons I love photographing couples in Montana is the landscape. It’s peaceful and rugged all at once—open fields with snow-dusted mountain peaks in the distance. It has a timeless, untouched beauty that feels like it slows everything down, which is exactly what I want my couples to experience during their session: a pause from real life, a chance to just be with each other.
On this particular morning, the wind added movement and drama to the already stunning setting. Sylvia’s long skirt and windswept hair, Boone’s arms wrapped around her to block the cold—it created these quiet little moments that felt straight out of a storybook. They leaned into it, literally and emotionally, and the photos we got as a result are some of my favorites I’ve ever taken.
If you’ve ever had your photo taken in less-than-ideal weather, you know how hard it can be to look relaxed when your teeth are chattering. But Sylvia and Boone were total naturals. Their connection was so strong and easy that it didn’t take much direction. They were playful and affectionate, laughing through the gusts of wind, stealing kisses and sharing body heat.
They didn’t show up to perform for the camera—they showed up to connect with each other, and I think that’s what made this session so beautiful. Those little unscripted moments—Boone brushing Sylvia’s hair out of her face, Sylvia pulling him in closer when the wind picked up—are the ones that tell a love story best.
I get asked a lot whether morning or evening is better for photo sessions, and while golden hour gets a lot of attention, there’s something uniquely beautiful about the morning light—especially in a place like Hamilton, Montana. The sun rises over the mountains with this soft, golden glow that wraps everything in warmth, even when the air itself is freezing.
Morning sessions also tend to be quieter. There’s less traffic, fewer people around, and a calm energy that sets the tone for something intimate and intentional. That’s exactly what we got with Sylvia and Boone. Despite the wind, the quiet of the early day gave us room to slow down and focus on just the two of them. No distractions—just connection.
If you’re thinking about booking a couple’s session and wondering whether it’s worth braving the chill for a morning shoot, let this session be your answer: absolutely yes.
As a Montana photographer, I’ve learned to embrace unpredictable weather as part of the story. We live in a place where the seasons shift quickly and nature always has the upper hand, but that’s part of the magic. A sunny, still day is lovely, of course—but wind? Cold? A little chaos? That’s when things get interesting.
When you lean into what the day gives you, you open the door for authenticity. Sylvia and Boone didn’t try to fight the wind—they danced with it. They let the cold pull them closer, let the messy hair and red noses tell part of the story. And in doing that, they created something honest and real—photos that feel like them, not like a styled shoot or a Pinterest board.
So if you’re nervous about unpredictable weather for your session, don’t be. I’ll guide you through it, we’ll adapt together, and I promise the results will be worth it.
