There is something about starting a session before the world feels fully awake. The air holds onto the night just a little longer, the light moves slower, and everything feels quieter in a way that invites you to pay attention. Mary and Grant met me in that in-between moment for their Winston-Salem engagement session, and it ended up being one of those mornings that lingers.
They were in town for Easter weekend, making the trip from Georgia. We planned for sunrise at Reynolda Gardens, which meant alarms set early and trusting that it would be worth it. It was.
If you’ve never been, Reynolda Gardens sits just behind the historic estate that now operates as the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and it’s one of my favorite spots as a North Carolina engagement photographer. You get a mix of formal gardens, open fields, winding paths, and that quiet sense of history that settles into the background of the photos without taking over.
You can read more about the gardens and seasonal blooms directly on the Reynolda Gardens website, which is always helpful when planning timing around what’s in bloom.

We began the session with someone who made his presence known immediately. Wally, their beagle, had no intention of easing into the morning. He was curious about everything. His tail never really stopped. There’s always a bit of unpredictability when dogs join a session, and honestly, that’s part of what makes it feel real. Wally pulled them in close, made them laugh, and gave us those in-between moments that you can’t plan.
There was one stretch where he decided a particular patch of grass was far more interesting than anything we were doing, and Mary just laughed, looking over at Grant like, “this is exactly what I expected.” That kind of interaction says more than any pose ever could.

Once we said goodbye to Wally who spend the rest of the time on a leisurely walk with Mary’s mom, we made our way deeper into the gardens. The light had started to shift by then, just enough to catch on the edges of the pathways and settle softly over everything.
This is where sunrise sessions really come alive. The gardens felt like they belonged to us for a little while. The snowball bushes were in full bloom, clusters of soft white flowers that almost looked unreal in that early light. They lined parts of the pathways, creating these quiet pockets where Mary and Grant could just be together without feeling watched.
There were tulips scattered throughout, along with other spring blooms that added color without overwhelming the scene. If you’re interested in other North Carolina garden locations, check out this guide: 16 Secret Gardens in North Carolina that Make Perfect Photo Session Locations
Mary’s dress moved so easily when they walked. At one point, I had them run down one of the garden paths, and it turned into this slightly chaotic, completely genuine moment of laughter. Grant tried to keep up. Mary didn’t slow down. The kind of moment that feels more like a memory than a setup.

We spent some time near the fountain, where the sound of water added to that quiet rhythm the morning already had. The stone walkways were still cool, and the light hadn’t fully broken through yet, which made everything feel softer. This part of a Reynolda Gardens engagement session always feels slower. There’s no rush to move on. You just follow whatever feels natural. Mary leaned into Grant without thinking about it. He kept brushing hair away from her face as the breeze picked up.

As the sun started to rise a little higher, we made our way toward the Reynolda House Museum of American Art. The architecture adds a completely different feel compared to the gardens. It brings in texture, structure, and a sense of place that grounds the session. The light hit the front of the house just right. Warm, but still soft.
From there, we wandered out into the open fields nearby. This is where everything opened up. They ran through the grass as the sun came up fully, and it felt like the morning had shifted into something new.
There’s a reason so many couples choose locations like this for their Winston-Salem engagement photos. You get variety without needing to travel far, and every part of the session feels connected.

Mary and Grant didn’t need much direction. They stayed close, moved easily, and paid attention to each other in a way that made my job simple. There was one moment in the garden where everything slowed again. The sun had just come over the horizon, and the light caught in Mary’s hair while Grant stood just slightly behind her, hands resting at her waist. No movement for a few seconds. Just stillness.
It’s easy to overlook those moments when you’re thinking about a timeline or a shot list. But those are the ones that tend to stay.

I know sunrise sessions aren’t always the easiest choice. Early alarms, figuring out timing, showing up before the coffee fully kicks in. But mornings like this make a strong case for it.
A sunrise engagement session in Winston-Salem gives you space. Less people, softer light, and a slower pace that lets everything unfold without pressure. Locations like Reynolda Gardens feel completely different at dawn compared to midday.
If you’re weighing your options, the sunrise and sunset times in Winston-Salem can help you plan around the time of year you’re considering.

By the time we wrapped up, the gardens had started to fill with people, the light had shifted into something brighter, and the quiet had faded just a bit, but we had already gotten what we came for.
Mary and Grant built their morning around intention. They showed up early, leaned into the experience, and trusted the process. That always changes how a session feels. And Wally would probably say he was the highlight, which honestly might be true.
If you’re planning your own North Carolina engagement session and want something that feels personal, slow, and connected to a place like this, Reynolda Gardens is always a beautiful option.
